Call to Order:
Merri Peck called the meeting to order at 7:15 PM. The open discussion topic was “Airplanes and Helicopters in Wilmington.” Photos and news articles were passed around. Stories told included the reporting of crashes, the Lindbergh connection, Julian Reiss, World War I connection, the use of helicopters and Whiteface development, the locations of airfields in area, the use of airplanes for black fly spraying and many more facts of interest. The business meeting started at 7:50 PM
The secretary’s report for the February 2010 meeting was corrected changing the fact Guy Stephenson was responsible for obtaining “the dog sledding” video from the Sears family. Also corrected was the spelling of author Keith Herkalo’s last name. Guy Stephenson made a motion to accept the minutes as corrected. Doug Wolfe seconded. Motion passed.
Merri Peck presented the treasurer’s report provided by Bob Cressey. Expenses were $329.25 for membership brochures; $349.00 for the sponsorship of Kate Messner’s workshop at the Lake Placid Middle School; $21.55 for the “Battle of Plattsburgh” book acquisition; $157.70 for membership mailing; and $44.00 for annual P.O. Box rental. The ending balance was $5265.91. Guy made a motion to accept the treasurer’s report. Doug seconded. The motion passed.
Merri reported that Karen had sent “Thank You” notes to Bridget Hinman, Bruce McCulley, Ted Blazer, and Jeff Byrne, all of ORDA, for supporting the membership drive. A “Thank You” was sent to Doug Wolfe for donation of North Pole stamps and covers. Charles Smith received a “Thank You” for the Sears family video. Bill Skufka received a “Thank You” for his help on installing picture railings in the Community Center.

“Battle of Plattsburgh” book by Keith Herkalo, 1 research request
Standing Committee Reports:
A .The Library Committee: The library committee reported the acquisition of the “Battle of Plattsburgh” book by Keith Herkalo. Sue Terrenzio requested information on the first Olympics to make artificial snow. This was referred to Doug Wolfe.
B. Publications and Programs Committee: Programs and Discussion Topics for the 2010 year were published and posted. The “Iron Mine Tour” was discussed. Guy Stephenson will let Karen know the status of the event, no decision being made at this time. Karen Peters and Doug Wolfe will meet to finalize programs for 2010. Dates to remember are September 11, 2010 Festival of Colors. Check the Lake Placid Website. Posters of events will be distributed. The topic “Whiteface Range Hall” may be included in a June program.
C. Membership and Nominations Committee: Linda Joss-Dyke reported on the membership drive. All mailings have been sent and Linda will report on the membership numbers at the next meeting.
Linda attended the Kate Messner workshop sponsored by the WHS and reported the excellent presentation was very well received by the 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students. A book Spitfire was purchased for the WHS. The novel tells the story of the “Battle of Plattsburgh” as seen through the eyes of a young person aboard the sailing vessel.
Karen Peters sent a report: The picture railing was installed in the Community Center by Bob Peters, Karen Peters, and Guy Stephenson with help from Bill Skufka.
The WHS website has been updated.
Guy Stephenson made a motion to adjourn the meeting at 8:20PM. Merri Peck seconded. Motion passed.
