Open Discussion : Lumbering and Sawmills in Wilmington

Merri Peck presented a slide show of photos relating to area lumbering and sawmills. A photo of the wooden bridge that existed prior to 1890 shows the site of one sawmill in the center of Wilmington. A map early of Wilmington identified other sawmill sites along with other industry. Numerous photos showed how logs were transported, by horse drawn sleds and wagons and down wooden chutes or log slips into the river. Guy Stephenson contributed information about many photos, including some of the log drives that took place during spring high water. Guy also gave much information about the sawmill photos and he was able to identify many of the people in those pictures. He presented a list of all known lumber mill and lumber related industry sites in Wilmington. Merri gave a brief history of Haselton Lumber.

Since there was no quorum of officers for various reasons, the regular business meeting was postponed until the next regular WHS meeting on Wednesday, April 2nd.

Respectfully Submitted,
Nancy Cressey
